Russian Gay Asylum Seekers Detained for over 9 Months in California.
Andrei and
Aleksandr, a gay couple from Russia, have been detained for more than nine
months at the Imperial Regional Detention Facility in Calexico, California,
while awaiting the resolution of their asylum request. Their story exposes the
severe challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals fleeing persecution and seeking
international protection.
Fleeing Russia and Arrival in the U.S.
The couple left Russia on March 14, 2024, after homophobic laws classified LGBTQIA+ organizations as extremist. Aleksandr faced direct threats at work, putting their safety at risk. They arrived in Mexico on March 15, 2024, where they waited 249 days for a CBP-One appointment before crossing into the United States on November 27, 2024.
Detention Conditions
From the
beginning, Andrei and Aleksandr were separated into different units
without explanation, a practice that reflects how same-sex couples are
often treated in detention centers.
Andrei shares a unit with 64 people, where overcrowding, poor sanitation, and excessive air conditioning negatively impact mental health and increase the risk of respiratory illnesses.
Health Challenges
- Andrei has a chronic
medical condition requiring regular medication and
quarterly checkups, but he has experienced delays in treatment and
limited medical care.
- Aleksandr suffers from an untreated ear infection, causing constant ringing and temporary hearing loss, as well as ongoing stomach issues that are inadequately addressed. His hospital care is not scheduled until December 2025.
Call for Solidarity and Action
The couple has authorized America Diversa Inc. to share their story publicly. Their case reflects the harsh reality faced by LGBTQIA+ asylum seekers in U.S. detention centers. Conditions, including procedural delays, insufficient medical care, overcrowding, and serious risks to physical and mental health, remain largely hidden by those running these facilities.
America Diversa Inc. denounces these inhumane practices and demands:
- Immediate release of Andrei and
Aleksandr so they can continue their immigration process in
freedom.
- Respect for their right to non-refoulement, protecting them from persecution and threats to their human rights in Russia.
